Week of September 21st

We concluded our mythology unit this past Wednesday, and on Thursday we began our new novel The Giver by Lois Lowry. We are also nearing the end of the "CARE" for your writing unit.
This week we will continue reading The Giver, and we will begin a unit on capitalization and punctuation. Don't forget that book reports are due on September 28th and that each class has its own due date for the mythological monster project.
Be sure to check Blackboard for a link to a vocabulary review game.

Tuesday- Finish any incomplete "CARE" worksheets
Wednesday-Chapters 1-5 vocabulary quiz from The Giver
Thursday- Spelling contracts are due and quiz tomorrow

This week we will be finishing up our study of mythology, and "CARE-ing" for our writing.

3. Give three reasons why the Sun’s daily journey is difficult.

4. Why does Apollo have to keep his promise to Phaethon?

5. Why do the horses run wild?

6. What happens to Phaethon?

7. How were the deserts made, according to this myth?

8. Explain the words written on Phaethon’s tomb.

9. Describe Phaethon’s character.

10. What is the underlying theme of this myth?

11. Is Phaethon’s fearlessness heroic or foolish?

12. What qualities of a hero does Phaethon have? What heroic qualities does he lack?

II. Literary Elements

Personification- giving non-living things the characteristics of life. Explain the following examples
1. “It is said that it was then the Nile fled and hid his head, which is still hidden
2. “You will have to pass beasts, fierce beasts of prey….The Bull, the Lion, the Scorpion, the great Crab, will each try to harm you.”

Conflict- opposing forces; there are 2 basic types of conflict – internal and external.
What is the main conflict that drives this story? Explain.
What is the internal conflict Apollo faces?

Week of May 3rd 2010

This week in class we will be finishing up our study of poetry by making poetry books. Pre-AP classes will be writing a book about their 7th grade experiences and general will be writing various forms of poetry such as Haiku, and Limerick.

We will also spend a great deal of time on SOL review, and we will have a last minute "crash course" in test taking skills.

This year has gone by so quickly it's hard to believe that we are already on the downward slope. If you would like to spend some online time practicing for various tests, don't forget to check out the link below.
